FIVE KILLED IN U.S. UNIVERSITY SHOOTING, GUNMAN ALSO DEAD by MONTANA NEWS ASSOCIATION
VOA News
14 February 2008
Authorities in the midwestern U.S. state of Illinois say a gunman killed five people at a university campus near Chicago before killing himself.
At least 16 people were wounded in Thursday's attack.
The shooter, armed with a shotgun and a handgun, burst into a crowded lecture hall at Northern Illinois University in the city of DeKalb.
University officials say the gunman died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The 25,000 student campus has been closed and classes scheduled for Friday have been canceled.
Officials say they have no reason to believe the shooting had anything to do with a message found on a university bathroom wall in December referencing a shooting rampage earlier last year at Virginia Tech.
In that incident, a troubled student shot and killed 32 students and teachers before turning a gun on himself.
Some information for this report provided by AP, Reuters and AFP.
